The History and Folklore of Moonshine

ABSTRACT

Moonshiners were a grouping of men and women who distilled whiskey and sold the unaged alcohol illegally. Many of the mechanics of making moonshine and the recipes have been passed down through generations. Moonshining is set in lots of history and traditions. It has survived wars, insurrections, depressions, movements, the Prohibition, and the Internal Revenue Service. During the Prohibition, alcohol had a popular following and there were many songs and stories written about moonshine. There is also lots to tell about the equipment used to make the moonshine. This website shows the history of moonshine and the folklore surrounding it.
